I’ve begun another big revision of the new manuscript and thought I would try Darcy Pattison’s shrunken manuscript technique. It was illuminating to say the least. I plotted the results onto a single sheet of paper so that I could analyze it a bit more. Breaking the results down into my three-act structure, I can see that I have a lot of work ahead of me. On the downside, about 27% of the entire manuscript is not as strong as it should be. On the upside, the weak chapters are evenly dispersed throughout the manuscript! I’m going to try the technique to visualize the temporal aspects of the manuscript. I’ve been suspecting that there is a temporal problem with the last act of the book, so perhaps the shrunken manuscript will illuminate those issues a bit more.
