I learned a new painting technique in Friday class. The goal was to do a quick painting (only 5 hours total) in a contemporary style, to evoke energy. The technique is so quick and the results are surprising. It begins with an underpainting – just blobs of color really. It ends with detail work that is sketched in using just black, white and one gray. I was amazed that the water ended up looking like water. I stopped a bit too soon, though. I was afraid of messing up the water so I didn’t do enough in the middle of the pond. Next week, we are going to do the same underpainting, but change how the detail work is done in order to get an entirely different look and feel.
